The smiling man is a horror short film directed by A J Briones released in the year 2015. It is the story of how innocence came face to face with pure evil. The story begins with a little girl moving around the house only to come to face with a strange creature that keeps her attention fixed. As the film proceeds, we see how this encounter is only going to result in the worst nightmares of the kid mixing into her reality. Spooked already? The highlight of this film lies in the simplicity. The director has skillfully implied simplicity as a key to producing outstanding short films! 

ALIVE IN JOBURG

Remember district 9? The alien Si fi movie? Here is the fun fact, district 9 is a more extended version of this short film! Directed by Neil Blomkamp, the short film Alive in Joburg is surely an inspiring piece. The short film discusses how the people of Johannesburg encounter an alien race and the situation they deal with after that. The population wants to eradicate the alien race but is it that easy? From there, conflict is inevitable.  

There is alien versus predators, the Predator, etc. How is this movie any different from them? Well, the short film alive of Joburg through a si-fi movie, tries to put forth other issues such as racial conflict and also keeps up with the photojournalistic approach to bring a sci-fi vision of the South African future.

I AM HERE

I am here is a short film directed by Sam Spike Jonze. The story twirls about an ordinary library assistant who finds his way to discover love! Sounds romantic! But with this new life, he starts to discover that he has to give a lot to make this work! I am here is an engaging, thrilling, and uplifting short film. The highlight of the movie lies in the simplicity of it! The director has tried to keep the short film very subtle and captures the loneliness of the city. Contrasting to this loneliness portrayed, he explains the Essence of friendship and love. Simple yet efficient is the right phrase for this movie.

NITISHASTRA

Directed by Kapil Verma, this short film, Nitishastra, represents the importance of bracing justice even if it commands one should go against one’s family! The movie takes its base from the great epic, The Mahabharata. Roshini is a defense teacher and dreams of advancing all women to fighting for themselves. This dream of hers is shattered when her brother harasses her student. Putting aside family relationships, she upholds justice and hands over her brother to the police. Ironically, at the end of the film, we see how his destruction is written by his sister, roshini. The movie shows great significance on women equality and empowerment while also upholding justice and righteousness 

KUJALI

The short film Kujali is from one of the collections by terrible tiny tales on YouTube. With a squeeze of humor, the story spins around parent’s reactions when they find a sex toy in their boy’s room. We get a peek of what might happen behind closed doors when parents try to figure out stuff on their own. Sonam Nair has succeeded in screening what would be a horror for most of us in a very humorous way.  This short film also won an award for the best short film at the 2018 film fare awards.

THE SCHOOL BAG

Created by Dheeraj Jindal in the year 2017, this movie will surely leave you in tears. This short film won the best short film award at the Lahore international children’s film festival. The short film revolves around a mother who goes to all extents to fulfill her son’s wish. Even though not perfect, their lives are happy. But, this happiness does not last for long.  We perceive the connectivity and bond shared between a mother and child. This bond soon becomes a sacrifice to wars and conflicts. The story takes place in Pakistan, but the chemistry depicted is universal.  Inspired by true events, this story will leave you shattered. It will also give an insight into the cruelty of war.
