Ever since the craze for it has only been growing! If you are searching for some evergreen gangster movies, here are 10 that must be on your watch list!

THE GODFATHER 2

Released 40 years on from its first sequence, the godfather 2 was as breathtaking as the first one. Honestly, it was more elevating than the first gangster sequence. 

Godfather 2 is a perfect example of the gangster genre in movies. This movie was appreciated so much that many films made later took their inspiration from this classic. 

 Al Pacino’s amazing acting skills, structure, and overall performance set the gold standards of this classic gangster movie. Also, thanks to this movie, even the bad guys are perceived as mistake-making humans at the end of the day.

SCARFACE

The gangster movie scarface was overlooked at the time of its release due to its graphical violence. But, thanks to its references in rap music and depictions in video games, the movie became a hit in few decades.

This gangster movie gives us a trip into the slums of Rio de Janeiro and splendidly explains how a group of kids grow up to become the deadliest of gangsters.

Even though the actors were new to the industry, they did a satisfying job with the characters! Well, seems like the new is good after all! 

This gangster movie is one of the best contemporary films made.

It has a very realistic approach and shows us how in the shadows of poverty-stricken slums, drug dealers are the kings.

The stories are well-told, and at times, funny, and at others, brutally shocking.

THE UNTOUCHABLES

The untouchable the remarkable works of Ennio Morricone and not only in the gangster genre but it also one of the best shootouts ever seen! 

The Untouchables is a violent and funny mixture. 

The script is precise and the direction of Brian DePalms is as good as always! Never a dull moment. 

Excellent and entertaining is the simple summary of this gangster film! And is recommendable to all fans of crime/gangster movies.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA

A flashback to the gangster lifestyle! Sounds cool right! This 1984 gangster movie, tells the tale of a gangster who returns to the streets of his gangster life after over 30 years. Once again the memories of his old life begin to haunt him.

The best part of the movie was the script and the acting. It took almost 12 years to finish the script and well, it’s safe to say that 12 years of hard work didn’t go waste. The actors gave life to the script so naturally. And described as one of the best cinematic art in the gangster genre, this movie is full of mystery, surprises, and drama.

 WHITE HEAT

Can a man be both, mamma’s boy and a psychotic gangster? A psychotic gang leader but a devoted mother’s boy leads a gang of thieves into a heist! He is so obsessed with his mother that the finale of the movie ends with him saying the phrase, “Made it Ma, Top of the world”

Psychotic, violent, and vicious grow with the movie. Did it send a Shriver up your spine? White Heat is a psychodrama gangster film that certainly delighted its audience so much that this classic James Cagney movie from director Raoul Walsh still holds up as one of the best gangster movies ever made!

DONNIE BRASCO

Donnie Brasco is a 1997 film where an FBI agent blends into a mob only to find himself identifying more and more with the mafia life. 

The dialogues are raw and extraordinary, the frames are accurate, and the actors have indeed done a wonderful job!

The movie is long but never seems draggy and even though written in the mildest form with the details of a gangster’s lifestyle and mafia, it doesn’t seem like a replica of any other gangster movie. There is action but again, it’s not an action movie. This extraordinary style and the subtle approach ties a neat bow to the film’s theme and storyline.

MAFIOSO

This 1962 Gangster movie is that Film where, if the production is a little less, it would have made the gangsters look like clowns and, a little too much would make the gangster look evil. 

This Italian gangster movie is expertly directed. With exceptional acting and good music backup, the switch from dark comedy to serious drama is sustainable.

The Italian actor Alberto Sordi has made a sound attempt to give life to his character. As a cherry on the top, the film has beautiful Italian locations. All these factors together put this gangster movie on the list!
