Drishyam released in 2013, was one of the most successful Malayalam movies in the history of cinema. It not only set the box office on fire but was also one of the few films to be translated into foreign languages (Chinese and Sinhalese). The movie won the hearts of its views and left them desperately waiting for the next sequence. And finally, an announcement was made that Drishyam 2 is releasing in 2021! Drishyam is a genuine family drama that deserves to be told. But, COVID’s influence on cinema and theater has left several controversies about the film’s mode of release. So, let’s see what’s cooking! 

Before the shoot of Drishyam 2, the director of Drshyam sequence, Jeethu Joseph said, “Once we get the clearance from the Kerala government, which we hope to, we could begin shooting,” He added, “I am in no hurry to release the film, as the cinemas have to open first and there are several films, affected by the coronavirus, are already lined up.”

And on January 1, 2021, Drishyam 2 lead actor, Mohanlal in a tweet said, ‘Georgekutty and his family is coming soon on @PrimeVideoIN #Drishyam2OnPrime #HappyNewYear2021”. Hence, the eagerly awaited Malayalam movie will not be exercising the traditional theater routes. This tweet positively hyped up the crowd. Well, at least most of the crowd…

The theater owners and production liberty Basheer were not charmed with the film releasing on OTT. They hoped that Drishyam 2 publicity in theaters would avail the role of theaters in covid 19 conditions. Ever since covid 19, the theaters are accommodating only 50 percent. This has generated a mixed result of the newly released films. The new normal has certainly horrified the public on visiting theaters. A demanded film such as Drishyam 2 would drastically change this downfall according to the theater owners. 

However, the director and film producer claim that the film, Drishyam 2, will screen on an online platform, as it would widen the number of audiences. Since the first sequence was a blockbuster, the second part, has the potential to fascinate more audiences on OTT. An online stage may also aid in the 2nd series to reach greater heights and expand the fan base.

The team is concerned that, if the movie Drishyum 2, is screened in theaters, it would not be able to reach its potentials. A lot of hard work executed for the film would not bear its fruits.  

Fans claim that the teaser of Drishyam 2 looks just as promising as its first sequence but, the movie streaming on amazon prime is what left many of them shocked. 

Now that theaters were operating, fans did anticipate the movie to appear in theaters. They desired a theatrical experience of the film but seems like that just remained a dream for many! Other movie lovers who hesitate to go to the theaters fearing the pandemic sure did get themselves a treat!

As long as Marakkar and Aarattu are theatrical releases, I have no issue with Drishyam 2 releasing on OTT. But it would have been great to watch it on big screen #Drishyam2onprime.

It is noticed that almost 66 other Malayalam movies got canceled due to covid 19. Considering this, it certainly is a wise decision to run the film, Drishyam 2, on an online platform (Amazon prime). It assures a more all-inclusive audience, and most importantly, the safety of people. The director has officially declared that the sequence of the 2013 blockbuster Malayalam movie, Drishyam 2, will stream on amazon prime in 2021! The date of release will be decided by Amazon.
